Taking care of your new tattoo
Washing:
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
Use a mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water to gently cleanse the area. I recommend liquid gold, foaming soap.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
Moisturizing:
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or ointment specifically designed for tattoos, such as Aquaphor. Make sure to apply a very thin layer, to much product can be damaging.
What to avoid:
Picking, scratching, or peeling scabs.
Swimming, soaking in hot tubs, or baths for at least 2 weeks.
Exposing the tattoo to direct sunlight without sunscreen.
Wearing tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo.
Using harsh chemicals or soaps with fragrances.
Timeline:
First few days:
Once the bandage is removed, there is no need to re-cover it. Wash gently 3-4 times a day, after each washing turn the water to cold and rinse for 30 secs. This helps with swelling and hydration of the tattoo. Then apply a thin layer of ointment, to where it is barely shiny. Applying too much ointment can cause damage to the tattoo, so make sure there is no build up.After a week:
Continue to wash and moisturize regularly. You can switch from an ointment to a non scented lotion. Make sure to not grab one that says ultra healing, these can contain citrus and can cause irritation.Full healing:
Most tattoos take several weeks to fully heal. Tattoos can look cloudy and dull for up to 30 days. Once the tattoo is done scabbing I recommend massaging lotion into it at least twice a day. This can help break down any scar tissue that may want to form. Remember to continue to protect your tattoo from sun exposure.
